Learn how to manage your WorkCover premium more efficiently
For many businesses, their WorkCover premium is the second greatest operating cost behind staff wages. Yet a lot of businesses do not fully understand how to manage their premium costs.
Victoria operates a ‘managed fund’. WorkSafe regulates the price and there is a choice of six authorised agents that employers can engage to manage their claims and premium. Even though WorkSafe sets the employers base premium, there is much that astute, well informed employers can do to control their WorkCover costs.
There are essentially 3 main factors that influence your WorkCover premium:
- Declarable remuneration;
- The industry rate; and
- Your claims experience.
Sounds simple, but in reality not many employers understand the full implications of these elements. Often employers are not declaring the correct remuneration amounts, particularly when contractors are involved. Often not aware that their declarations are incorrect until a wage audit is performed by WorkSafe which can result in costly penalties. Alternatively, employers may be over-declaring their rateable remuneration and paying a premium in excess of what they are legally obliged to pay.
Similarly, as a result of the favorable economic times over the past ten years, many businesses have diversified their operations and as a result, their industry classifications may no longer be correct.
There are also claims costs and ‘Statistical Claims Estimates’. Prevention is better than the cure, but sometimes the cure evades us. It is known that effective prevention measures and claims management practices have a direct impact on the calculation of WorkCover premiums paid by employers.
