2009 STUDENT WORK PLACEMENT -
DIPLOMA OF FOOD SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
EMPLOYER INFORMATION
Students are in the second year of a Diploma course. This is different from work experience. We expect the students to participate and contribute in any appropriate duties/techniques of the company they are working at. Many employers use this as an opportunity to recruit & try out new staff.
The students have experience in:
- Microbiology and microscopy
- Basic chemical lab skills (weighing, solution making, pipetting etc, using a spectrophotometer)
- Food production techniques
- Hygiene & sanitation
- HACCP
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend workplace punctually and ready for work for 5- 10 days
- Maintain a logbook of their activities during their placement and an assessment workbook- this is entirely confidential between all parties.
- Perform designated work under appropriate supervision
- Work safely in the laboratory and follow all policies and procedures.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
- Inform the workplace when they are unable to attend due to illness or other reasons.
- Fill in competency evidence plan- get supervisor to countersign
EMPLOYER/SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY
- Allocate tasks to the students appropriate to their skill level and give them opportunities to experience a real work situation.
- Provide adequate supervision.
- Provide 5- 10 days work experience.
- Sign student logbook recording daily tasks and provide any relevant comments.
- Countersign evidence sheet after student has written it up.
ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS
Before work placement commences, a contract will be signed by all parties (RMIT University, employer and student). This covers legal requirements for the arrangement (including Workcover)
No payment of the students is required. State Legislation covers Workcover premiums.
